It’s a question we ask our clients frequently at Tej & Co and over the years we have heard all kinds of answers.

To most people, healthy skin is mainly linked to its appearance; clear skin, free from blemishes, no discoloration and a glowing complexion, however healthy skin is so much more than just what we can see on the surface.

It’s a complex topic that we’ve been waiting to discuss for a while, so now we’re sharing everything we know with you about what healthy skin really is and how you can achieve it.

Understand the facts.

Let’s start with the basics.

First and foremost, our skin is our largest organ, yet when it comes to caring for it, this is something many of us often forget about.

We naturally focus more on the heart, the lungs, and the kidneys; meanwhile, our skin becomes bottom of the pile despite it needing just as much attention as our internal organs.

Did you know?

  • On average, adult skin covers a surface area of approximately 22 square feet
  • Human skin is composed of three layers; epidermis, dermis and hypodermis
  • Generally, our skin renews itself every 28 days up to our mid-twenties, this increases to 40-60 days as we get older
  • The average person has around 300 million skin cells
  • Elasticity in the skin starts to reduce as early as 18 years old and can’t be replaced
  • We lose on average 1% of collagen a year – that’s without other factors such as general health, medication and lifestyle
  • Our skin naturally ages, it’s happening all the time; just like the rest of our body, everything is slowing down and its not a process that will stop

Once you begin to understand more about your skin, it quickly becomes evident the importance of caring for it.

This is often easier said than done though; with so many skincare products offering to transform the look and feel of your skin, it can often feel a little overwhelming.

More than skin deep

Achieving healthy skin is much more complex than just a strict skincare routine and indulging in the latest skincare brands.

To really achieve healthy skin, first you need to take a look at all the factors that may be having an impact on the health of your skin, these include:

  • Diet
  • Stress
  • Pollution
  • Lifestyle
  • Medication
  • Hydration levels
  • Genetics
  • Free radical damage

There are so many different things to consider which is why we advise all our clients that to achieve the healthiest skin, it is firstly about finding what may be taking its toll on your skin, then making changes that you can maintain.

Tej & Co Founder Tejinder Ghag says,

‘Healthy skin is about maintaining our skin to it’s very best appearance for as long as possible. Nobody wants to look aged, yet with life’s stresses and challenges, skin isn’t always a priority despite it being one of the first things to suffer.’

People of all ages, genders, and races have skin concerns. By looking at your current situation and understanding what may be causing any issues is the first step to educating yourself and making changes to improve the health and quality of your skin.

From here, there is a wealth of skincare treatments available to help correct your skin concerns whether that be acne, ageing, discolouration or something else.
