One of the main ways we judge our appearance is by the colour and texture of our skin – our skin tone. The more even the colour and smoother the texture, the younger we appear and more attractive we feel. But a number of factors can affect skin tone on the face or body, such as changes in the distribution of melanin (skin pigmentation or colouring) or the amount of collagen and elastin (which gives skin its volume and texture).
Sun damage – may lead to darker patches called ‘age spots’ or ‘liver spots’, particularly on the face and hands. It can also reduce levels of collagen and elastin so that skin sags and wrinkles prematurely.
Discolouration or pigmentation – light or dark brown areas develop, particularly on the face, in a cluster or big patch rather than as spots or freckles.
