August marks the start of Psoriasis Awareness Month a campaign run by the National Psoriasis Foundation to raise awareness of this often debilitating condition.
The National Psoriasis Foundation has raised millions of pounds over the years to provide research, training and other vital funds to support people suffering with psoriasis. As a clinic dedicated to skincare we wanted to support this important campaign and raise awareness of the condition.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis affects around 3% of the population causing red, flaky patches on the skin. The severity of the condition can vary from mild through to extremely debilitating. Understandably it can have a big impact on quality of life.
Although the reason behind psoriasis is not fully understood it is thought it might be related to a problem with the immune system and the body’s natural defence mechanism against disease and infection.
People with psoriasis have an increased level of skin cells which means, while most people replace skin cells in a period of 3 to 4 weeks, people with psoriasis make and replace skin cells in much shorter time frame, sometimes in as little as 3 – 5 days. This means the skin develops a build-up of the dry scaly patches which are a common feature of psoriasis
Psoriasis isn’t contagious and can’t be passed from person to person, it’s thought genetics may play a part as well as common triggers like stress and infection. Certain types of medication can also trigger a reaction in the skin for some people.
Skin Treatments
There are various forms of treatment available to target the effects of psoriasis including creams, medication and LED Light Therapy.
While it’s often a mild case for people, psoriasis can have a negative impact on confidence and self-esteem. Some of the classic treatment options can trigger new breakouts on already damaged skin, so this is why we feel passionately about offering a variety of treatment options to our clients.
Corneotherapy
Corneotherapy is a skin treatment methodology which forms the basis of the skin treatments we offer in the clinic. It involves looking at the physiological and biochemical framework of the skin and focusses on the restoration and maintenance of the skin barrier. The theory behind the process means when we correct and repair the base, or framework of the skin, it is then in the optimum condition to effectively receive products and treatments.
We work with gentle yet effective products that are tailored to our client’s skin condition. Our skincare programmes address the cause of the skin complaint in order to reduce symptoms. They work at a deep level helping to restore the skin and making it stronger and more comfortable.
Our product range nourishes and protects the skin and supports the repair of the skin barrier. We don’t use any of the abrasive treatment methods which can cause skin to react such as heavy exfoliation or skin peels.

Dermaviduals Skincare
Dermaviduals is a German brand that we use and recommend in the clinic. All products in the range are medical grade and we customise each product to the client, whether that’s a cleanser, serum, or moisturiser. Healthy skin is a priority for the clinic and we do all we can to ensure that yours is in its optimum condition.
