The importance of a good skincare routine to protect and care for the skin barrier.

Protecting my skin and building a good routine has always been important. In my teens and early twenties I suffered with various skin problems, so taking care of my skin barrier became a priority. It was through having my own skincare journey that led me to setting up Tej & Co over twenty years ago and that passion has continued to this day.

I have experienced first-hand the debilitating nature of problem skin and have also lived through the effects of my skin improving and the impact that had too. As I’ve got older and head towards new milestones, my skincare routine has changed and evolved as it does for all of us. While injectable treatments can be a great quick fix solution for the reduction of lines and wrinkles, for me it’s the skin barrier and the function of the skin as an organ that is the most important factor in any good skincare routine.

If you can restore and replenish the skin barrier, then the number of treatments and products will reduce. It makes sense when you think about it; the more damaged your skin barrier is, the more reactive your skin will be and so the cycle continues. You won’t get the results you hope for.

If I can keep my skin barrier nourished and protected with products, including those with an SPF to protect my skin from the harmful UV rays from the sun, as well as a healthy lifestyle to supplement this, then I can continue to bypass the injections for now. I’m not saying I won’t use them, I’d just prefer to avoid them for now.

Injectables are great for the loss of muscle mass and bone density which happens with the aging process, so as I’m approaching my mid 50’s I’m not saying never but just not yet. Injectables don’t address the texture of skin pore sizes or pigmentation and uneven skin tones.

So if you’re starting to reach an age where you’re thinking more about your skin and anti-aging treatments I would always recommend you look at the skin structure first of all. From there you can move on to other treatments if you wish, but addressing your foundation, which is the skin and the skin barrier first, will bring you optimum results.

A strong and healthy skin barrier can help reduce any adverse reactions after injectable treatments because the skin is better equipped to heal itself and repair from any superficial trauma. It makes sense to develop and maintain an excellent skincare routine!

The truth about a good skincare routine

barrier story

A good barrier should be the foundation of any skincare treatments. If your skin barrier is damaged and in a reactive condition, it won’t accept products as well; whether that is through treatments or products. You need to address the root cause first of all and then build from there.

Newsflash – there isn’t a one-off miracle treatment which will solve your skin concerns. No matter what the price tag or promises are. We’ve been in this business for a long time and a phased and considered approach where we look at the skin from a holistic perspective is essential.

Care and protect the skin

This probably goes against many of the things you’ve read about online and on social media, but reduce the number of products you’re using, stop doing peels, scrubs and intense exfoliation. Less is more. Go back to basics and protect the skin. Build it back up and nourish, care for and protect it, especially as we head into winter when it is cold and can be harsh on the skin.

We assist our clients by offering skincare analysis and product recommendations which care for the skin and protect the skin barrier. The products we offer are medical grade and contain no harsh additives or strong fragrances. They are fantastic for reactive skin types.

Once the skin is responding to products and becomes calmer, we will discuss the advanced treatments offered in the clinic. The popular treatments which bring excellent results but the base or barrier of the skin must be in optimum condition first.

Hope this is useful to you. I’m not in the business of sharing methods don’t work or that don’t bring the results clients are hoping for. You don’t stay in business for as long as we have been operating for without giving clients good, sustainable results and techniques. We love sharing our knowledge and helping people, it’s where our true passion lies.
