How to tan safely for a sun-kissed summer glow
Springtime is busy at Tej & Co: April is Rosacea Awareness Month, shortly followed by Sun Awareness Week in May. While you daydream of faraway beaches, we are busy strengthening your temperamental skin barrier before any summer drama!
How to tan safely with Dermaviduals
As our pale winter skin ventures from hibernation into bright spring sunshine, you might yearn for a golden, healthy glow. We don’t want to spoil your fun, but our job is to help you tan safely without ageing prematurely. Think of us as the sensible friend who stops you from burning.
We take special care of redheads and those who suffer from Rosacea. We know your skin hates the sun and needs to be careful, or it will end up red and inflamed. Your skin barrier is much more vulnerable than other skins, so we must protect it at all costs. Without wanting to be dramatic, a tan is a scar on your skin and a sunspot waiting to happen. It’s a sign that your skin is desperately trying to protect itself -so let’s fake it.
Managing rosacea by supporting your skin barrier
First, let’s blend your personalised self-tan for the face and body. Then, let’s sunbathe safely with our tinted SPF and lifestyle hacks.
In a perfect world, you’ve already completed our 3R skin barrier repair steps with us. But if not, don’t worry; you can still with our Dermaviduals wardrobe of travel-sized skincare products. They have a Derma Membrane Structure (DMS) base that mimics and strengthens your skin barrier while you’re busy relaxing. Dermavidual products contain no harsh preservatives, fragrances, or silicones, so they can be used on even the most sensitive skin..
Holiday Prep: Spray Tans Vs Sunbeds

We are so relieved that people are swapping sunbeds for spray tans due to the risk of cancer – your future skin will thank you. But have you ever felt thirsty after a spray tan? They can dehydrate the body and the skin, leaving it parched and lined.
The other option is Self-Tan. The harsh chemicals in OTC brands can irritate the oil glands, leading to blackheads on the nose, so Dermaviduals decided to formulate a natural version. It combines their signature DMS base, a natural version of active tanning agent DHA (dihydroxyacetone) and Erythrulose, a sugar derived from raspberries and red berries. Yes, it takes longer to develop, but it is far more even-toned, natural tan – no one is getting tangoed.
Rich in hydrating shea butter, it can be used all year round to even out the skin tone, not just on holiday.
We can even custom blend the self-tan with Dermaviduals Hydrating Lotion if you prefer a gradual tan -think of us as colour-correcting alchemists. Just don’t forget to do an enzyme mask first for an even-toned glow.
How to avoid breakouts from SPF
So you have the most beautiful sun-kissed glow. Which do you choose – a physical or chemical sunscreen? There is so much misinformation about sun protection. If sunscreen leaves your skin dry, red and itchy, the problem might not be whether it is a physical or chemical sunscreen – the problem could stem from your sensitive, reactive skin. Over-the-counter sunscreen will damage inflamed skin far more than UVA damage. It will clog your pores and won’t sit evenly.
Dermaviduals sunscreen SPF 30 and 50 with DMS reinforces your skin barrier and stops it from panicking when you go in the sun; the new generation photostable filters protect against UVA and UVB. (Older generations degrade more quickly in sunlight). It can be used as a daily moisturiser because it’s full of skin-replenishing, restoring, and moisturising ingredients – we can even blend a tinted version available in three shades to match your skin tone. (Dermaviduals is a chemical sunscreen, but those individuals with darker skin and redheads may prefer physical block).

Staying safe in the sun
At Tej & Co, we educate our clients that SPF isn’t the be-all and end-all of UV protection. We can blend a myriad of liposomes high in antioxidants into a pre and post-sun serum to protect your skin from UV damage and restore what the sun has taken out—like your summer amour.
- Reapply sunscreen after swimming in the sea or pool (UV reflects off the water).
- Wear UVA & B sunglasses and hats, especially when the UV index is higher after 10 am.
- Sit in the shade with your back to the sun.
- Alcohol + sun: Trouble!
- Rosacea is an anti-inflammatory condition – leave when you feel hot.
