DULL, DEHYDRATED SKIN WITH OPEN PORES

WHO GETS DULL, DEHYDRATED SKIN?

We all have good and bad skin days. But what if your skin has started feeling tight, rough and uncomfortable daily? What if it always looks dull and grey? What if open pores keep staring you in the face? Before you reach for a rich, decadent moisturiser, stop! Your skin is probably dehydrated rather than dry, and you need professional help to rebalance it.

Dull dehydrated 1

What is dull, dehydrated skin?

It’s easy to confuse dry with dehydrated skin, but did you know they need different treatments? So let’s sort it out.

Dry skin is lipid-dry. True dry skin is a genetic skin type: it can’t produce enough lipids to seal in moisture and keep your skin soft and supple.

Dehydrated skin is water-poor: water has evaporated through an impaired skin barrier, like a leaky roof, leaving the skin sensitive and tight. Corneotherapists have a fancy term for this evaporation: TEWL (transepidermal water loss).

Dull dehydrated 2

What causes dull, dehydrated skin?

Water-poor skin is unhealthy. Cell renewal slows down, and instead of skin cells falling off naturally, old skin cells hang on for dear life and block out the light – say hello to dull skin. Your skin cells are like sponges: without water, they shrink, emphasising fine lines and pores.

Great news – this common skin condition, which affects all skin types, is temporary and can be easily treated.

Bespoke Facials

After a detailed skin consultation,  we will address the root cause of your dehydrated skin. Healthy skin is a mixture of water and oil, so your treatment plan will combine cutting-edge technologies to calm inflammation, strengthen your skin barrier and rebalance your skin’s pH.

Bespoke Skincare

First, we must discover if this is an environmental problem or a skincare problem. If you have been using over-the-counter (OTC) skincare, please listen to your skin and bin it. At Tej & Co, we recommend using Dermaviduals bespoke skincare, which supports your skin barrier. There are no foaming cleansers or AHAs that strip your skin cells, mess with your microbiome and cause sensitivity over time. Instead, our enzyme mask only removes excess skin cells that are ready to call it a day.

FAQS

It is impossible to have both dry and oily  – the shine is a classic sign of dehydration. Thirsty skin around the pores shrinks, emphasising the pores. If we address hydration first, the surrounding skin will stop shrinking, and you will stop noticing pores.

Lined, tired skin is a classic sign of dehydrated skin and poor water flow in the skin tissues. Thirsty skin shrinks, emphasising fine lines, especially around the eyes. Not a good look we know but we can help.

Contrary to popular opinion, hydration levels in the skin have little to do with our water intake. No excuses, however – water is vital for our health. Try eating water-rich foods such as cucumber and grapes so you don’t spend the whole day on the loo.

If your skin is dry and stroppy, we understand the urge to reach for a rich, comforting oil. But dehydrated skin needs water, not oil, and you will clog your pores and end up with a spot. We recommend you step away from nourishing oils.

Imagine a storm has torn a massive hole in the roof of your house, and rain has leaked through your living room ceiling, damaging all the carpets. Now imagine replacing the carpets before mending the leaky roof – pointless. The skin is the same: prioritise repairing your leaky roof (your skin barrier) over replacing the carpets (addressing dullness and dehydration). At Tej & Co, we always address the cause and not treat just the symptom.

Your hardworking moisturiser can’t penetrate the layer of dehydrated skin cells and just sits on the surface. This layer of skin cells needs to be removed, but avoid using heavy-handed peels, acids, or harsh scrubs that strip our precious skin oils. We must hang onto these after age of 35! Instead, we recommend you use our gentle but effective enzyme mask that is rich in papaya and pineapple, which only removes skin cells that are ready to come off without upsetting your skin barrier!
